Before working on a real submission, try the same page operations on documents whose contents you already know. These files were created for this CommandPDF walkthrough. They contain invented labels, not customer data, real invoices or payment instructions.
Download the two inputs
- Practice cover (PDF, one page): its heading is PACKET COVER.
- Practice invoices (PDF, two pages): the first heading is INVOICE A, followed by INVOICE B.
Both files use A4-sized pages with selectable text. They deliberately contain no forms, digital signatures, attachments or passwords. The checks below exercise ordinary page copying; they are not evidence that every feature of a complex PDF will survive.
Assemble the packet
Open Merge PDF and add both files. In the file list, place practice-cover.pdf above practice-invoices.pdf. The list determines file order; the two pages within the invoice file retain their own sequence.
Leave the bookmark option enabled if you want entries named after the source files. This option creates file-level bookmarks. Do not interpret its label as a promise to preserve every nested bookmark from an arbitrary input.
Merge the files and download the result. Open that downloaded PDF. It should contain exactly three pages:
- PACKET COVER
- INVOICE A
- INVOICE B
Search for “INVOICE B” to check that the copied text is still selectable and searchable. Inspect the page dimensions if your reader exposes them; this example uses A4 throughout.
As a useful cross-check, merge again with the two source files reversed. The expected order becomes INVOICE A, INVOICE B, PACKET COVER. This demonstrates why adding the correct files is only half the task: their order also matters.
Extract the invoices without the cover
Use the correctly ordered three-page result in Split PDF. Choose the page-range mode and enter 2-3. Select a single combined output for this excerpt.
After splitting, the downloaded excerpt should have two pages: INVOICE A followed by INVOICE B. It should not contain PACKET COVER. Search for the three headings to check both what was retained and what was excluded.
These numbers refer to positions in the uploaded file, starting at 1. Printed page labels can differ in real documents: a cover or preface counts even when it is unnumbered. Always match the range boundaries to the visible page headings.
For a second exercise, use the every-page split mode on the three-page packet. You should obtain three one-page PDFs. Open each result; filenames alone do not prove that the intended page is inside.
Diagnose a result that does not match
The cover is last: return to Merge PDF and move the cover above the invoice file. A merge copies the file list in order; it does not identify a cover from its contents.
The excerpt contains the cover: confirm that the input is the three-page merged result and that the range is 2-3. Applying a range to a different file changes its meaning.
The result has only one invoice: check both ends of the range. A range of 2 requests one position, while 2-3 includes two positions.
Pages have different paper sizes in your own packet: merging preserves source page dimensions. It does not automatically turn Letter, A4 and landscape pages into one size. Use Fix Page Size separately only if that is required.
Apply the same check to your own work
Write down each source file’s page count, the intended file order and the heading on each boundary page. After merging, the total should equal the sum of the inputs. After extracting, compare the result against the requested positions.
Keep originals, especially signed or interactive documents. A passing result with these simple examples does not establish signature validity, form compatibility, accessibility tagging or legal suitability for other files. Test the features that actually matter to the recipient.
CommandPDF performs these page operations in the browser. The website and processing libraries still need to load over the network. Start with synthetic files like these when testing functionality or inspecting network activity.
